Sir Laurence Howard Rutland Scholarship
The Sir Laurence Howard Rutland Scholarship has been made possible thanks to generous philanthropic donations from Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ alumni and supporters. This scholarship is for applicants with connections to the County of Rutland, UK, to support them during their studies at the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.
Each successful applicant will receive £2,000 a year for three years, subject to a review of the applicant’s progress and circumstances each academic year.
One scholarship is available this year.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet one or more of the following criteria to be considered:
- One or more of the applicant’s parents and/or grandparents were resident in Rutland at the time of the applicant’s birth, and evidence can be produced to confirm this
- The applicant attended primary or secondary level education in Rutland regardless of their residency at the time, and evidence can be produced to confirm this
- The applicant has undertaken on a voluntary basis significant activity, research or other service of public benefit to the people and county of Rutland.
- Be classed as a mature student, meaning you will turn 21 on or before Monday 21 September 2026, the first day of Term 1 of the 2026-27 academic year.
- The applicant meets one or more of the additional criteria below, and can produce evidence to confirm this:
- Applicant was previously in local authority care
- Applicant has refugee status
- Applicant is the sole carer of a parent, close family member or school age sibling or siblings
- Applicant has achieved excellence in academic, sporting or other pursuits

The deadline for applying for this scholarship is 10am on Monday 12 October 2026. Applications made after this date will not be considered.
As part of your application, you will be asked to provide a personal statement of up to 350 words, which should explain:
- What difference receiving the scholarship will have towards your university experience.
- What barriers have you already encountered or overcome in pursuit of your education.
- What ambitions do you have for your time at university and/or the future beyond university?
- What achievements, academic and/or personal, are you most proud of. There is no right or wrong answer; we are just keen to hear your own story.
Applicants who are shortlisted will be contacted to request any evidence required to verify if they meet the award criteria. Failure to provide requested evidence will mean that the application cannot be progressed.
Acceptance of a Sir Laurence Howard Rutland Scholarship does not affect eligibility for any other scholarship or financial aid schemes.
Notification
All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications by Monday 30 November 2026.
