Employability

Work whilst you study

Taking on part time work whilst you study is a great way to earn some money during your time at university. It also allows you to develop some new transferable skills which will be very beneficial when you are looking to secure a graduate role or placement.

Fortunately, studying at a university in a vibrant city like Leicester means that there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants always looking for students just like you to work on a part time basis, so there are lots of options for you to find something you’re interested in.

We’d recommend taking a look at sites such as and to see what vacancies are live. You could also keep an eye out in the local area for adverts on social media, noticeboards and in windows.

A big tip is to ensure that in your application you make it clear you are a full time student. You need to ensure that the company is aware of your commitments and that you are allowed to take time off during exam or holiday periods.

Did you know we also offer options right here on campus. This would be our first port of call when looking for a part time job, as your managers will understand that your studies need to come first and will have more flexibility with you.

There are a couple of options for working part time on campus.

Student Ambassadors

We recruit for Student Ambassadors twice a year. If you are passionate about the Â鶹ÊÓƵ and want to share your experience with prospective students this could be a great option for you. You can join the team from the moment you start at the University, and so long as you continue to meet the requirements you will remain an ambassador for the duration of your time studying here if you want to. We do not accept applications from final years or Postgraduate students.

If you successfully become an ambassador, you can apply to a variety of jobs on Open Days, school visits, UCAS events days, campus tours and much more! You will have a requirement to work at least three shifts a term and can work up to 20 hours a week. On top of this there is opportunity for training in various areas of work such as working with young school children or public speaking in student life talks.

The Students' Union

The Students’ Union also offers plenty of part time opportunities. Jobs are advertised directly on the . As well as these roles, you can get involved in supporting the student community.

Leicester 100
The Leicester 100 is a representative panel at the heart of decision-making within the Students’ Union, responsible for voting on student policies and determining whether they are passed. The panel meet four times during the academic year.

All members are paid for attending and contributing at the usual student staff rate, with full paid training and guidance provided before the first meeting.

As a student-led organisation, it is essential that the voices shaping decisions reflect the diversity of our wider student population. The Leicester 100 has been established to ensure this, with members selected to proportionally represent students across protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act 2010.

The Leicester 100 forms part of the SU’s commitment to forward-thinking, inclusive change driven by students.

Applications open in early September and will involve a simple application form, after which the Data and Insight Team at the Students’ Union will review submissions to ensure the panel is as representative as possible.

Academic Representatives
Academic Reps are students who have volunteered or been selected to represent their cohort's voice on issues surrounding academics and community.

The core function of an Academic Rep is representing students by listening to and collecting feedback through conversations and surveys. Reps then take this feedback to relevant meetings such as Student Staff Committees (SSCs) where they work alongside staff members to act on feedback to improve students experience.

Peer Mentoring Scheme
The Peer Mentoring Scheme has been created to support new students during their transitional period to university through peer-to-peer support.

The scheme helps build an inclusive and welcoming environment to university by cultivating a supportive relationship between mentor and mentees.

Current Â鶹ÊÓƵ students volunteer to become mentors, and they often have a unique perspective of the demands of university and the services available at Leicester. Mentors receive training and continuous support from the Peer Mentoring Team throughout the scheme.

Not only is becoming a mentor an enriching experience but also adds valuable skills to your CV. This is a voluntary scheme, however, only Senior Peer Mentors are paid for their time.

Leicester Services Partnership

Leicester Services Partnership (LSP) is the University’s catering and retail operator delivering all catering, retail, and bars operations across the campus.

LSP always endeavour to provide a consistent customer service experience, inspirational spaces to eat, drink, relax, reflect, learn and socialise and offer something entirely new for their customers.

Offering roles across their operation, if you think you can provide excellent customer services.
