Research
Professor Louise Goff, an academic Dietitian, was appointed Chair in Nutrition Science at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ's Diabetes Research Centre in April 2023. Professor Goff leads an innovative, world-leading nutrition science research programme on ethnic health inequalities, with methodological expertise and a strong track record in investigating the pathophysiology of cardiometabolic conditions, how this may be ethnically distinct, and the mechanisms by which nutrition modulates this pathophysiology. Professor Goff’s deep phenotyping research programme (‘SOUL-DEEP’), a first in UK African-Caribbean populations, has shifted understanding of T2D development in people of African descent. Professor Goff has secured >£5 million of competitive research funding (£4.1 million as Principal Investigator), including an NIHR Advanced Fellowship and NIHR HTA grant, for ethnicity and health inequalities research, adeptly translating grants into patient/public impact and securing further funding to advance the field. Professor Goff's community engagement research to develop and evaluate nutrition and lifestyle programmes for long-term condition management in African and Caribbean communities has delivered significant NHS/public health impact, with rapid adoption and commissioning of two programmes: Healthy Eating & Active Lifestyles for Diabetes (‘HEAL-D’) and Living Lighter the African and Caribbean way (‘Up!Up!’). These have been spotlighted by NHS England and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities as examples of innovation and best practice for tackling health inequalities. The impact and novelty of Professor Goff's work in the field of nutrition science was recognised through the award of the Diabetes UK 2023 Rank Nutrition Prize. Professor Goff has published >75 peer-reviewed publications.
