Profile

"I am a clinical epidemiologist and Associate Professor with over 27 years’ experience in cardiovascular nursing across clinical practice, education, and research. I have held four competitive personal research fellowships from the Florence Nightingale Foundation, Wellcome Trust, and NIHR, and lead an internationally recognised research programme spanning three core themes: (i) the collection, linkage, and analysis of large-scale health data to investigate the sociodemographic and comorbidity epidemiology of heart failure; (ii) patient-centred outcomes; and (iii) health informatics and digital innovation.

At the Â鶹ÊÓƵ, I lead the Population Health theme within the British Heart Foundation Centre for Research Excellence and the Heart Failure and Multiple Long-Term Conditions theme within the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre. Nationally and internationally, I hold senior leadership roles within the cardiovascular nursing and heart failure research communities, including incoming President of the British Association of Nursing in Cardiovascular Care, Nurse and AHP Lead on the British Society of Heart Failure Research Committee, and membership of European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Association scientific committees.

I contribute to the international research community through editorial and peer-review roles, including the European Journal of Heart Failure, JACC: Heart Failure (Statistical Consultant), the British Journal of Cardiology, and the British Journal of Cardiac Nursing. I also serve on NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) funding panels, including the East Midlands and the under-represented professions scheme. Previously, I was a task-force member for the current European Heart Failure Nurse Curriculum."

Research

My heart failure research programme has been funded by Wellcome Trust, NIHR and BHF. I also work closely with Leicester NIHR BRC, BHF CRE and Leicester Real World Evidence Unit. I am deputy director for Leicestershire Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme funded by Wellcome Trust.

Teaching

"I contribute to the Masters level duel registration nurse and leadership programme within the School of Allied Health Professionals and am involved in the development and delivery of research teaching within the curriculum. I am an experienced lecturer in undergraduate and post graduate nurse programmes and inter-professional education and have experience in curriculum development (including the heart failure curriculum for European Society of Cardiology). I developed and led the first specialist cardiology nursing courses in the Shropshire Cheshire and Staffordshire region which included specialist nursing practice in interventional cardiology specialist cardiology nursing practice and cardiac rehabilitation. I have a keen interest in informatics and developed one of the first on-line assessments for pre-registration nursing at Keele University and was an active member in developing computerised clinical simulation using manikins at the School. I am also committee member of British Association Nursing Cardiovascular Care and co-develop bi-monthly webinars and annual training days for nurses in cardiovascular care."

Press and media

I have conducted a number of media interviews and am happy to talk about my heart failure research particularly in the areas of demography epidemiology comorbidity and outcomes.
