Filmmaking
Module code: MS2003
Filmmaking is one of the most demanding yet rewarding modules on the programme, and students who take it regularly cite it as a highlight of their degree. Throughout the module, you will be introduced to both the theoretical foundations and practical techniques of documentary production. Its central aim is to give you hands‑on experience of filmmaking while deepening your critical understanding of the production process through structured reflection and peer assessment. You will have extensive opportunities to learn the fundamentals of camera operation, directing, sound recording, lighting and editing, gaining first‑hand insight into what it means to work as part of a film crew.
After initial training, research and planning, groups are equipped with professional filming kits and sent out to create their documentary. You will then edit your work in the School’s state‑of‑the‑art Media Lab, using Apple iMacs and industry‑standard software such as Adobe Premiere Pro. The module culminates in a final screening where we celebrate everyone’s films and create space for constructive peer feedback and reflection on the production process.
